The AK-47 is the gun you hold for half of every match, so it is the skin most people buy first and the one they see most. The market for it is deep at every price. That is good, because there is something decent at every rung, and bad, because there is also a lot of noise. Here is a ladder that holds up, with honest picks per rung and what to check on each.
Rungs are relative, not fixed. Prices move with the market, so read entry, mid, high and top as steps on the same ladder rather than as numbers.
Entry: clean and cheap
At the bottom you want a finish that reads as a whole rifle, not as a pattern stuck on a stock model. Solid colors and simple shapes survive wear far better than detailed art does.
- AK-47 | Slate. Dark grey with a plain matte body. It looks tidy at every wear rating because there is nothing to scratch off. The safest cheap AK there is.
- AK-47 | Elite Build. Grey and black with orange accents. Wear shows on the receiver edges but the look survives well into Field-Tested.
- AK-47 | Ice Coaled. Black body with icy blue detailing on the receiver and handguard. Cheap because plenty of them exist, not because it looks cheap.
What to check: nothing much. On this rung the float barely moves the price. Buy the lowest float you see at the price you like and move on.
Mid: the classics
This is where the AK skins that everyone recognizes live. They cost more because everyone wants them, and they hold value for the same reason.
- AK-47 | Redline. Matte black with red carbon stripes on the handguard and receiver. The float range runs from 0.10 to 0.70, so there is no Factory New Redline. Minimal Wear is the top of this skin, and a low Minimal Wear copy is the one collectors want. Wear shows as grey scuffing across the black, which some people like. Do not pay Factory New money for a Redline. It does not exist.
- AK-47 | Asiimov. The white, orange and black sci-fi finish. White paint shows wear fast, so the difference between a low and a high Field-Tested copy is big on this one. Look at the render before you buy.
- AK-47 | Phantom Disruptor. Dark body with a grey and white illustrated panel. Reads well at Field-Tested and gives you a lot of detail for the money.
- AK-47 | Nightwish. Purple and teal creature art over a dark base. Bold, and the art holds together at mid floats.
What to check: exact float and where it sits inside the band. On this rung the float starts to matter, and a copy near the top of Field-Tested looks nothing like one near the bottom.
High: the ones you notice across the server
- AK-47 | Vulcan. White with cyan and black panels. It is the cleanest-looking AK in the game at low floats and one of the harshest at high floats, because the white goes grey and every scratch shows. Buy the lowest float you can reach.
- AK-47 | Neon Rider. Synthwave rider in pink, purple and cyan. Dark base, so wear is forgiving. A Field-Tested copy still looks like the thumbnail.
- AK-47 | The Empress. Tarot art on a red and gold body. Detailed, and the detail is what fades, so aim for Minimal Wear or better.
- AK-47 | Bloodsport. Red and white racing finish. Another white-heavy skin where the float is the whole story.
- AK-47 | Inheritance. An ornate engraved finish with gold work on a dark base. Newer, and popular for the same reason The Empress is.
What to check: stickers. On this rung crafts start to appear, and a rifle with four expensive stickers is priced for the stickers, not the rifle. Decide whether you want them before you pay for them.
Top: collection skins and blue gems
- AK-47 | Fire Serpent. Olive body with a red serpent along the receiver. An old Covert from the Bravo era, and a clean copy is rare because most of them have been worn for a long time. Pattern does not matter. Float and stickers do.
- AK-47 | Wild Lotus. Pink lotus flowers on a green body. It comes from a map collection, so there is no StatTrak version and no case is refilling the supply.
- AK-47 | Gold Arabesque. Gold filigree over black. Also a collection skin, also no StatTrak, and it wears cleanly because the base is dark.
- AK-47 | Case Hardened. The skin where the pattern index sets the price. A plain seed is a mid-rung rifle. A blue gem, where the blue lands on the visible side of the receiver and magazine, is one of the most expensive items in the game.
What to check: everything. Float, the exact seed for Case Hardened, the sticker set and sticker wear, and the inspect render from the playside. At this rung you are paying for the specific copy, not for the name.
The ladder at a glance
| Rung | Pick | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | Slate | Nothing. Buy the lowest float at the price. |
| Mid | Redline | No Factory New exists. Minimal Wear is the top. |
| High | Vulcan | White body. Float decides the look. |
| Top | Case Hardened | Pattern index. Verify the seed, not the seller’s word. |
Three things that apply on every rung
- StatTrak is a separate line. Case skins have StatTrak versions, collection skins do not. The counter adds to the price. Decide whether you care before you compare.
- The wear label is a bucket, the float is the truth. Two Field-Tested copies can be a long way apart. Read the number.
- Look at the receiver and the magazine. That is what you see in first person on the AK. The stock is mostly out of frame, so wear there costs you nothing.
Buy the best float you can afford on a finish you like, on the rung you can afford. A clean mid-rung skin beats a scratched high-rung one every day.
On PrefireSkins every lot shows its exterior and, where known, its float from inspect data, so you can apply all of this before you pay. The rest is taste. The AK is on screen for a long time each match, so pick the one you will not get bored of.
