SMG skins worth owning

MAC-10, MP9, UMP-45 and P90 skins that hold up in a match, why SMG skins are priced the way they are, and which ones are cheap because of supply rather than looks.

SMG skins are where the market is kindest to a buyer. The guns come out on force buys and anti-ecos, so they are on screen a lot, but they are not the guns people spend on, so the finishes are cheap. Some very good ones are cheap because they were dropped in bulk, not because they look cheap. Here are the ones that hold up, by weapon, and the reason the prices sit where they do.

Why SMG skins price the way they do

Three things push SMG prices down relative to rifles.

  • Time in hand. You hold an AK or an M4 for most of a match. You hold an SMG for a few rounds. Less time on screen means less demand for a skin.
  • Case tiers. Most SMG finishes land in the lower tiers of a case, the ones that drop most often. Rifles and pistols get the Covert slots more often. More copies means lower prices.
  • Fourth purchase. Most people buy a rifle skin, a pistol skin, a knife if they can, and then stop. The SMG comes after that, and fewer people get to it.

The exceptions prove it. When an SMG does get a Covert slot or comes from a map collection, it prices like a rifle, because rarity is rarity. And when a case is opened in huge numbers, even its higher-tier SMG can end up cheap.

MAC-10

The T force-buy gun. Short, boxy, and in first person you see the top of the receiver and the side of the magazine housing. Finishes with art on the receiver work. Finishes that put the art on the stock do not, because the stock is out of frame.

  • MAC-10 | Neon Rider. The synthwave rider from the AK finish, on a dark body. A Covert, so pricier than the rest of this list, but it is the one MAC-10 skin people recognize across the server.
  • MAC-10 | Disco Tech. Purple and teal with a disco motif. Dark base, wears well.
  • MAC-10 | Toybox. Bright cartoon toys on a dark body. Loud, cheap, and the busyness hides scratches.
  • MAC-10 | Malachite. Green stone pattern. Cheap, plain, and it looks fine at any float.

MP9

The CT force-buy gun. Small on screen, with the magazine and the top rail taking most of the view. Simple, high-contrast finishes read best.

  • MP9 | Hot Rod. Glossy candy red, from the Chop Shop Collection. No StatTrak, closed supply, and it is one of the few SMG skins that prices like a rifle.
  • MP9 | Starlight Protector. A magical girl illustration in pink and blue on a dark body. Busy, popular, and the dark base is forgiving.
  • MP9 | Wild Lily. Pink lilies on a dark green body. A case skin with a collection-skin look, without the collection price.
  • MP9 | Food Chain. Cartoon sea creatures in bright colors. Cheap, cheerful, and it hides wear.

UMP-45

The mid-round gun on both sides, and it shows a lot of body in first person. The receiver is a big flat slab, so illustrated finishes work better here than on the MP9.

  • UMP-45 | Primal Saber. A sabre-tooth cat in purple and pink on a dark body. The one UMP skin most people can name, and it wears well.
  • UMP-45 | Blaze. Flames on black, the SMG version of the Desert Eagle finish. Old, simple, and the black hides everything.
  • UMP-45 | Momentum. Orange, grey and black geometric finish. Busy in a clean way, so scratches disappear into the pattern.
  • UMP-45 | Motorized. Red and black with a motor theme. Newer, dark base, forgiving.
  • UMP-45 | Exposure. Green over black with an X-ray look. Cheap, dark, holds up.

P90

The gun that fills the whole screen. The P90 is a bullpup with the magazine on top, so in first person you see the top of the receiver and the magazine more than anything else. Finishes that paint the top well look good. Finishes that keep their art on the side are wasted.

  • P90 | Asiimov. White, orange and black. The rule about white bodies applies, but the P90 shows so much surface that the orange and black panels carry it. Buy the lowest float you can.
  • P90 | Emerald Dragon. Green dragon on black. An old Classified from the Bravo era, dark base, ages well.
  • P90 | Death by Kitty. A cartoon cat in pink on a dark body. Old, well known, and the dark base does the work.
  • P90 | Elite Build. Grey and black with orange accents, same family as the AK-47 finish. Cheap, plain, tidy at any float.
  • P90 | Nostalgia. Retro console art in bright colors. Busy enough to hide scratches.

The short list

SMG Safe pick Step up
MAC-10 Disco Tech Neon Rider
MP9 Starlight Protector Hot Rod
UMP-45 Exposure Primal Saber
P90 Elite Build Asiimov

On an SMG, buy Field-Tested and put the money you saved into the float on your rifle. Nobody inspects a MAC-10.

Before you buy

  1. Check the float, even here. Field-Tested is a wide band and some of these finishes show it at the top.
  2. Open the render and look at the top of the gun. That is what you see on an SMG, more than the side.
  3. Decide on StatTrak. Case skins have it, collection skins like Hot Rod do not, and on a cheap skin the counter can be a large part of the price for no change in the look.

On PrefireSkins prices are in EUR and every lot shows its exterior and, where known, its float from inspect data. For an SMG that is more than enough. Pick a finish you like, check the number, and spend the rest on the guns you hold longer.
