M4A4 or M4A1-S: which rifle to skin first

The two CT rifles are two separate skin markets. How the suppressor changes what you see, why the lineups differ, and the popular picks for each before you spend on the wrong one.

Every CT loadout has to answer one question before it buys a skin: M4A4 or M4A1-S. They fill the same job in a match, they cost about the same to buy, and their skins are not interchangeable. A finish made for one does not exist for the other, or exists under the same name with a different look and a different price. Pick the rifle first. Then pick the skin.

Why they are separate markets

The two rifles are different items in the game files, with different models, different paint kits and different float ranges. Skin names overlap in a few places, but that is the artist reusing a theme, not the same skin on two guns.

Demand is different too. The M4A1-S has been the more popular rifle for stretches and the M4A4 for others, because Valve moves the balance between them from time to time. Skin prices follow the players. When one rifle is the meta pick, its skins climb and the other’s sit flat.

Supply is also different. Each case hands a skin to one rifle or the other, which is why the two lineups look nothing alike. The M4A4 has the older Coverts and the only Contraband weapon skin in the game. The M4A1-S has more of the recent flagship Coverts.

What the suppressor changes

The M4A1-S carries a suppressor and you can take it off. That matters for skins in two ways.

First, the suppressor is part of the model, so the paint kit covers it. Some finishes paint the suppressor to match the body. Others leave it plain. Look at the inspect with the suppressor on before you buy, because that is how you will see it most of the time.

Second, if you play with the suppressor off, the front of the rifle changes. Whatever art sits on the suppressor is gone and the bare barrel shows instead. If a finish puts its best detail on the suppressor, and a few do, you lose it the moment you detach.

The M4A4 has none of this. What you see in the inspect is what you get in the match.

The other difference is size on screen. The M4A1-S is the longer gun in first person because of the suppressor. The M4A4 shows more of its handguard and magazine. Both show the top of the receiver and the side of the body, which is where most finishes put their art.

Picks for the M4A4

Skin Look Note
M4A4 | Asiimov White, orange and black White body, so the float decides the look. Field-Tested copies vary a lot.
M4A4 | Neo-Noir Black with a noir figure in pink and blue Dark base, wears well, one of the safest mid picks.
M4A4 | The Emperor Tarot art, gold and red on black Sister skin to the AK-47 | The Empress. Detailed, so aim clean.
M4A4 | Desolate Space Blue and purple sci-fi scene Cheap for what it is. A good first M4A4.
M4A4 | Temukau Colorful manga art Busy finish that hides scratches.
M4A4 | Poseidon Pale body, sea god illustration Collection skin, no StatTrak, and the pale base shows wear.
M4A4 | Howl Orange wolf on black Contraband. The only one. Priced as a collectible, not a rifle.

Picks for the M4A1-S

Skin Look Note
M4A1-S | Printstream Pearl white with black ink and a color shift The flagship. White body, so buy low float. The suppressor is painted.
M4A1-S | Hyper Beast Teal, pink and purple creature Busy art that hides wear. Good at Field-Tested.
M4A1-S | Chantico’s Fire Red, black and gold Dark and clean. Wears well.
M4A1-S | Cyrex Black with red and white panels Old favorite. The red dulls with wear, so check the render.
M4A1-S | Golden Coil Black with a gold snake Dark base, gold detail. Reads well at any float.
M4A1-S | Player Two Retro game art in pink, blue and yellow Bright, detailed, and better clean.
M4A1-S | Knight Ivory and gold Cobblestone Collection, no StatTrak. Same trade-up pool as the Dragon Lore, and priced like a collection Covert.

Which to skin first

  1. Skin the rifle you actually buy. Look at your last twenty matches. If the M4A1-S is in your hands, an M4A4 skin is a wall ornament.
  2. If you switch between them, skin the one you use on the maps you play most, and buy a cheap solid finish for the other.
  3. If you are buying for looks alone, the M4A4 shows more of the body and has the bigger flat panels, so art-heavy finishes read better on it. The M4A1-S looks best with dark, clean finishes that carry onto the suppressor.

Pick the rifle by how you play, not by which skin caught your eye. A skin on a rifle you never buy is the most expensive skin you own.

Before you pay

Check the float and the render from the shooter’s side, with the suppressor on for the M4A1-S. Check whether the skin is a case skin with a StatTrak line or a collection skin without one. Check the stickers, because crafts on both rifles are priced for the stickers, not the gun.

On PrefireSkins every lot shows its exterior and, where known, its float from inspect data, and delivery is a Steam trade offer sent to the trade URL you enter at checkout. Confirm the rifle, the finish and the wear in the offer before you accept it. Until you accept, the sale can be refunded in full. After that it is final.
